Hmm, what about Tmo's Value Plan. . .

when 20 months is up, your bill goes down by $20/mo so long as you don't get a new phone, right?

On AT&T, the prepaid service is $65 including 1GB of internet, with $.05 per MB overages... That's a heck of a lot more than the postpaid $90 option with 3GB (assuming one uses 2-3 GB per month). And, like you mentioned, you are stuck with a 3G phone on prepaid, but get better, 4G service on postpaid.

I also get MUCH better service with Verizon or AT&T than the other providers...

Isn't it true that you get what you pay for? Location, location, location?

Or are people who buy the phone at full price and then activate with AT&T or Verizon simply paying for other customers' phones?

For one thing, the scam described in the article is part of what makes post-paid plans more profitable for AT&T and Verizon, so no one should be surprised that they set up the plan details and their policies such that people are encouraged to go post-paid.
