Of course, having a few towers lit up is not the same as good coverage. I've been carrying an iPhone on T-Mobile for much of the past two months in Philly and New York, and while basic coverage has been great, 3G coverage has been 50%, at best.

Yes, exactly. My factory unlocked iphone 5 picks up 3G, but falls back to EDGE majority of the time. Especially in buildings where I would have full AWS 3G support.

Strange how we haven't heard a word about the iPhone being sold and how much on T-Mobile since they announced it coming.

That's what I've been wondering as well, WHAT iPhone will TMO get!?!
Because an unlocked one just isn't doing it. I'd like to see one with full support for TMO's network.

I don't recall that T-Mobile has announced getting iPhones.
They HAVE announced that they'll be offering Apple products, but no specific product has been mentioned.

IIRC, att learned along time ago that 3g on 1900 was crap for penetration in densely populated areas....

Yes same with me and my unlocked Note 2 from ATT. In the city area I am experiencing about 50% for 3G and Edge when I am driving. However I am so lucky to have 4G where I live, at school, and at work where I spend about 80% of my time. So I am very fortunate in that sense. The 4G speeds are beast! Ranging from 2Mbps up to 10mbps they are even faster then my cable internet Time warner call them Time Failure 😛 haha.
