I'm still thinking they're going to be some unhappy customers when they purchase an LTE only device. Only to find out it VZW still has some big LTE gaps. Especially in building.
Eh?

Well SOMEBODY has to kick off the VoLTE phones at some point. And if VZW does it, then i'm sure they will beef up their LTE footprint, which the article explains. LTE in my area is pretty decent as it is right now, and this article is saying that it's gonna be better in about a years time. Woot!

My Droid Charge gets 3G in some places still.
I live in Ct.
And I have unlimited data, only way to keep it is to pay $620-$700+ for a new smartphone (S4) which of course I can't afford in one lump sum.

Soo, I am seriously considering a switch to T-Mobile, who STILL has unlimited data, and their value plan allows me to pay for the S4 over time.
And because Ct is essentially a suburb of NYC & Boston it will get Tmo's LTE somewhat soon.

Supposedly it'll be launching by the end of the month.
They just have to send a software update to the Note 2.
At least Las Vegas & Kansas City are ready.

You could just use a credit card and pay for it over time.

We're at least a year away from seeing VoLTE-only handsets that might have the problems you are talking about.

I worked at VZW during the analog to digital conversion. Digital-only handsets (the good ol' LG VX6000) didn't get launched until Verizon's native network was well over 99% digital coverage. There were still significant off-network analog areas in the wilderness that were covered by way of roaming agreements, but pretty much all the core coverage was 1xRTT.

We'll see the same thing happen here, I'm sure. Once the 700 MHz spectrum is built out to cover the existing 3G footprint, then you can most likely expect to start seeing devices that are 1xRTT + LTE only, cutting out the EVDO radios.

1xRTT will almost certai...
