It's amazing
That an "Intrinsically safe" phone would only be "required" in certain locations. Shouldn't this be a precaution that all devices should push towards? I know it's unlikely, but I have seen a spark come out of a cell phone and ignite gasoline. Maybe it takes 20 - 30 calls to a phone sitting next to gasoline for this to happen, but that 5% risk is unacceptable, as far as an Explosion is concerned. All devices should work towards being Intrinsically safe.

Wow, thats insane! At 1.2 inches thick, there better be some Gold inside that phone! $1099.99 for ANY phone-first device, whether it is IS or not, is insane. For that price you can pick up a Satellite phone with included minutes. Wow.

It's very easy to say "shouldn't everything be made to not be an ignition source", but it's not at all easy to actually make a product that is guaranteed to not be an ignition source under most circumstances.
An IS device has to be effectivley sealed so that a combustible mixture can't enter the body of the phone, thus igniting during internal switching, etc. Also, you'll never see an IS device that has a conductive metal exterior (a la iPhone), unless it also has a permanent grounding conductor tied to the conductive case.
It's highly unlikely that sparks emanate from a cell-phone, unless the Li-ion battery is in process of a thermal runaway, or one is plugging or unplugging the charging cable. By far the most likely source of sparks ...

Its probably something that isn't well known to the masses.
At several points in my life I have worked in areas that normal cell phones are not allowed for this reason. One of them was an oil refinery. Another was a company that did research in the aerospace industry. They take no chances in those environments and that is what something like this would be for.
In both instances, all cell phone possession or use was banned. They used approved radios or land lines within the facilities.
Probably not as much of a niche market as you might think it would be. Must be thousands of facilities that need this.

I can see you replacing your i365 with this no? I know the original Sonim phone Sprint had to offer for DC was crap for audio quality, I wonder if this one is built any differently from the first one that will make it any better. If it is IS, one can assume it has better internals, different antenna design, different speaker and mic, etc.
