Nothing New

This is not really news actually.

Pandora stated a long time ago, years ago in fact, that they would impose a limit on all devices of 40 hours per month. The only way around it would be to subscribe to the Pandora One account, which would allow unlimited listening as well as ad-free listening.

Maybe I misunderstood all that years ago but to me, I always kept my listening well under 40 hours when I have better options like Slacker (a wider selection of music, and no limits) and TuneInRadio.

Actually, Pandora had removed the 40-hour limit in early 2011, providing for unlimited listening over the course of the last two years. This is a reversal.

How about an accurate headline then? "Pandora goes back to old business model" "Pandora goes back to curbing monthly usage" etc. No reason to follow the lamestream media with dramatized headlines. Especially given none of the sourced links have any information that they did this previously. Gives PhoneScoop the accuracy-and-extra-facts advantage. With cheese!

The Reuters one is funny. People still pay XM money for their garbage quality radio?

Also love how Pandora is like, "this will only affect 4% of our listeners" - well then if it will only affect 4%, how will it even make enough of a difference to accomplish anything?

if they have only a million listeners and 4% of those listeners have to pay $0.99 per month to listen to all the music they want, that's $39,600 per month ($475,200 per year) in additional revenue ..

pulling in an extra half million is good business.

It's garbage to you. What do you do if you are in a place where you get no cell phone signal and you don't want to listen to your library of music? Satellite radio maybe?

With unlimited data going south with most carriers, I'm surprised this is an issue. Most of my friends have curbed the Pandora usage as they fear going over their cap.

However, users as myself that have unlimited data, I see where Pandora would show some concern.

Yes that is pretty annoying having to do that. You should give Spotify a try. Works for me. The only negative about them is that they dont have rights to Led Zeppelin, Beatles, and a few other artist I really like. Sigh. But at least I have their albums on Vynil so im not sweating it 😛 would be nice to listen to them on the car ride home but oh well ill live.

It doesn't look like unlimited data is going south if you look at T-Mobile and Sprint.

But it does if people aren't using those services. That 50% percent of the big four only accounts for a quarter at best of the total subscribers for the big 4.

The big problem is that TMob and Sprint don't have rural coverage and can't handle the data gluttons that are jumping from VZW and ATT. Eventually I predict that unlimited data will go away on them too.
