It will be up to the device manufacturers (and carriers) to release upgrades (or not) for specific devices.

I've already been informed by Samsung that they plan to make a 5.0 upgrade for the i730, for example. But usually the carrier also has to approve, so if Verizon doesn't want it or won't approve it, that upgrade won't be released.

Personally I think Verizon will not authorize Windows Mobile 5.0 for any of their current phones, and a few of the upcoming will also more than likely include Windows Mobile 2003. I myself use the Verizon UTStarcom XV6600 PPC, so this is kind of upsetting.. But with Verizon's history with personal communications outside of what they want on their phones (such as tranfering files via bluetooth) adding to the ease of doing so, won't be something they will be moving towards.

Is the Bluetooth fully functional on your 6600 or is it limited to handsfree and dial-up?

I have the Samsung sch-i600 and had it for a year when the new upgrade and patch came out. Verizon updated my phone noquestions asked. They even posted the upgrade on line for a month before making you go to a store to have it done. So lets just wait and see. You may be surprised...

I can do everything with bluetooth on my phone. I've transfered files via bluetooth between my phone and a cingular V551.

We're talking about the carrier/handset manufacturer relationship here. If the carrier don't want it, it ain't getting done.
