I've taken to turning my phone on airplane mode when I'm not using it, mainly while sitting in class. The buildings at my university are killer to signal, and it wasn't uncommon for my phone to burn over 10% battery (and overheat in my pocket) trying to look for signal. In airplane mode, it doesn't lose a single percent.

I think we need two things to significantly improve battery life in smartphones: energy efficient antennas, and energy efficient screens.
