I personally prefer Android devices, but without competition a OS become stagnant.

With Microsoft Window's 8, BlackBerry's BB 10, and Canonical Ubuntu phone are trying to innovate (in UI, price, design, security, apps etc) in someway to make them stand out in the crowd and grab the 3rd spot crown (hopefully they are shooting for the top but we have to be realistic here).

If we only have iOS/Mac OS X and Android/Chromium they OS will become scary similar and the differences will slowly erode away.

With the BlackBerry stopping sales in Japan, it is lessening competition for the Japanese people, which is never a good thing. Hopefully this move is only temporary until they build there shares up a bit more.

Good points!

All of Apples products are set up with high profit margins. They really don't care as much about market share as you might think. Even rumors of cheap iPhones have been partially responsible for driving down its stock price as of late because cheap iPhones mean lower profit margins and less money coming in. I think they will stay a "premium" brand so to speak.
My 2 1/2 year old is an expert at IOS.Its that easy to use the basics on it. It's getting stale, but I think Apple knows it. They never say what they will do next. They have tons of cash to do anything.
Android has the model for taking market share, but the OS makes nothing that I know of for Google. Go figure.

There is room for Windows and Blackberry just purely f...

OEM's don't have to pay to license Android, but they do have to pay for access to Google services, Google search, Google Calendar etc.....and an Android phone without Google services is pretty useless....so Android does indeed make money for Google....

Google has always been a little elusive in the past with revealing what it actually made on Android leading people to speculate that it was actually losing money on it.

Its such a widely used platform now that you would think it has all changed. I am just not aware of it.

Its actually a bit frightening thinking about what this company knows about its users and how it can use the info to give them a better experience on their phones

They also make money off of apps, music and movies from the Google Play Store.

I am no fan of Apple at all. I am a total Apple hater, but where do you get the idea that they are losing market share with the iPhone?

They have gained 2 percentage points in the US from the 3rd quarter of last year to the 4th quarter of last year

The iPhone is not as dominant as it used to be and I looked at a world statistic, I think I saw it on either Android Authority or Cnet I don't remember which now.

Market share has never been the primary concern for Apple in any of its products. Profit margins (which are crazy) are.
They make tons of money.
Android has the formula for market share

They aren't losing market share but there is a lack of growth and a growing sense that iOS is stale and needs a radical revamp to stay competitive,

One thing about Apple...
Tomorrow morning they could drop a bombshell with a total OS revamp. No one would ever see it coming with how secretive they are.
There is also that lingering question in everyones minds about Apple in a post Steve Jobs era. Every time they tried anything without him, they failed.
