I think it is more of an elbow of time than a waist, but that's just me....

However, if that StarTac phone is really all that person wants or needs, just think of all the money the StarTac user has SAVED him/herself, and all of the electronic waste that StarTac user has NOT generated, compared to all those people who are slaves-to-fashion-phones and just HAVE to have the latest, coolest device to show off to their friends.

Or, say YOU just need to commute to work daily in an inexpensive, reliable car, and say that a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic fits that need perfectly for you. Why then would you want someone to tell YOU to go out and buy say, a Tesla Model S, just because it's what someone else thinks is the coolest thing to have today?

Hats off to your friend the StarTac user who knows what they truly wan...

The StarTac is an old analog phone, it wouldn't support current networks. Heck, it isn't even a
GSM handset.

The StarTac was first introduced as an analog phone. That phone was so successful that it was later updated.
They later added the digital bands and went from those bright LED numeric displays to LCD. The ones we had in '99 were "tri band" with the two Verizon digital frequencies and a backup analog. I think the GSM version was only digital later.

Thats why he is still able to use it on networks

When I worked for at&t (quit in August 2010) I met quit a few customers who still had Motorola RAZR's from as far back as 2003-2004....one of them wanted to upgrade, and he asked me if he should and my advice and I told him that if he is happy with his phone and it still works than he might as well keep it until it breaks....no point in upgrading if you don't need to...I'm sure if my supervisor had overheard that conversation he wouldn't be happy, 'if you get a chance to make a sale, make a sale' but I figured that it is better over the long run for the company if you consider the customer's needs before the bottom line...

T_Bone wouldn't the company be making more money from him keeping his current phone, because then they wouldn't have to pay for the subsidies?

With AT&T you pay on average $200 or less for almost any phone (correct me if I am wrong) on contract, but the phone actually cost upwards around $600 - 700. So that's $400- 500 dollars needs to recoup over two years to get their money back right? So wouldn't the guy keeping his old phone actually be making more money for AT&T?

Not too many phones last for as long as 2 years anymore...durability is a thing of the past for the most part...it's been years since I've had a phone that lasted an entire contract.
