The StarTac was first introduced as an analog phone. That phone was so successful that it was later updated.
They later added the digital bands and went from those bright LED numeric displays to LCD. The ones we had in '99 were "tri band" with the two Verizon digital frequencies and a backup analog. I think the GSM version was only digital later.
Thats why he is still able to use it on networks
