Well the reason it took so long is because the market changed very suddenly, everyone was caught flat footed by the release of the iPhone, and then by the release of Android. Look at what the market was before the iPhone, you had Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm and Symbian. Palm and Symbian are toast and Blackberry and Windows are struggling to find a place in the new market. It's not even that the iPhone was wildly innovative or anything, really the iPhone couldn't do anything that other smartphones couldn't already do, they just had a sleek packaging and lots media attention so that people thought it was more innovative than it really was. Microsoft came out with their new generation mobile OS before RIM because Microsoft had already been planning to ditch Windows Mobile and start over from scratch before the iPhone was released, RIM had to develop a new business model on the spur of the moment, That can't be done quickly. But with the new generation Blackberry thatf finally brings both the OS and the hardware up to par with competitors, we should see the market share start to inch back up.
