Do not install on iPhone 3G (3GS just fine)

Eventhough we don't sell or support the iPhone, i've had Two callers today with iPhone 3G who somehow installed the 6.1 update, and it pretty much bricked their device, can't even turn it on.

How is that even possible? The 3G was cut off after 4,0.....I'm frankly surprised it is even possible to update a 3G to 6.1,

The 3G can only go up to 4.2.1. If they downloaded the firmware and then tried to force restore, I'd think it would still tell them the firmware was not compatible with the phone.
