I have to agree...
Insurance is not bundled with other carriers-- if I did not pay for insurance on my AT&T or Sprint phone I'm in the same boat as a T-Mobile customer.
And if you're on a contract plan, T-Mobile will roam on other carriers networks in remote areas (assuming there is GSM coverage of some kind). When I was on contract, I even saw roaming on AT&Ts GSM network in some places. And as srich27 said, you always have coverage on highways (since the carriers back in the early 2000s deployed a common network along the interstate highway system).
FWIW I had a "golden" Sprint SERO plan on my second phone that I ported to T-Mobile Monthly 4G. Once the HSPA+/LTE migration is completed, I will be able to use my primary phone on two fast networks..
