I wonder how durable gorilla glass 3 will be. Given that gorrilla glass 2 has proven to be very durable, This glass might do away with the need to have a screen protector at all, or make it even more finger print proof. At least, this is from my experience, with my Nokia 920. I have much less issues with finger prints and oily smudges on my screen, than I did with my old Samsung Focus, which had a plastic screen.

I haven't dropped my Nokia, so I can't really comment on how sturdy it is. I'm still waiting on my Otterbox case, but I hope I don't drop it before I get it.

Personally, I haven't seen anything from Gorilla Glass to impress me in relation to impact resistance: a friend dropped his iPhone 4S and it shattered like, well, glass. I've dropped 2 HTC phones--Inspire and a One X--from about 3 feet (bumped off a bench). Both shattered. Both landed on their backs, do the screen wasn't even the point of impact. Scratch resistant, maybe (I don't put keys and my phone in the same pocket), but I've really been disappointed in its impact resistance. It'd be really nice to not have to use an Otter Box. They're ugly. But, I'm a klutz.

Any idea what version of gorilla glass my Samsung Droid Charge has? It's horrible with finger oils!

The Droid Charge most likely has 1st gen GG, if it has Gorilla Glass at all. I don't think phones started coming out with GG2 until around the GS3/iP5/L920 era. I'm actually kind of surprised they're coming out with gen 3 already.

It sure would be nice to have a screen that I don't leave so much damn finger oils on!

Fingerprint resistance, etc. is due to an oleo-phobic coating on top of the glass.

I could be wrong, but I think Corning only supplies the base glass, not the oleo-phobic coating (the phone maker adds that... or doesn't.)

So I'm still using the Samsung Droid Charge, how
does the Galaxy S3 handle finger oils?

I'm hoping to get the Galaxy S4 when it comes out in May.

You're right, Corning does not coat the glass with an oleophobic coating, and yeah, the maker of the device applies or does not apply the coating.

This is really something you want. On a device that has it, you can literally see it working if you push your finger into the screen and quickly let go, anybody with an iPhone knows.

As for the GS III - I have got zero complaints so far about a dirty screen. I HAVE gotten a complaint about the microphone port getting clogged up with dirt and fuzz, however.

Gorilla Glass is just the main glass layer. Its key attributes are resistance to breaking and scratching.

What makes it resist fingerprints is an oleo-phobic (oil-resistant) coating on top of the glass. As far as I know, that's something added by the phone manufacturer after they get the Gorilla Glass from Corning. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.
