Man, I can't wait to see the first news story of someone getting killed trying to get their Iphone 5 back from someone in detroit that stole their phone..

Even better, why not be able to make the phone leak a highly caustic acid on the person that stole the phone or even explode!
Oh! can't do that. Criminals have rights too.

You can go to the authorities with the info, you don't have to go to the thief's place of residence yourself.

I thought that was obvious.

Go to the authorities? They are going to laugh all the way to the nearest donut shop. They have better things to do than apprehend someone for an I-phone theft.
Like bust a new driver for 1mph over the speed limit, pull someone over for a can of Red-Bull that looked like a can of Coors Light, etc.,

That's assuming a couple of things. First, you have to hope that it even gives you accurate info. Second, even if it does, what if the theif lives in an apartment or housing complex? The service isn't going to give you that much detail on the exact address. It only gives approximates, anywhere from 100ft to 500ft. That's depending on if it is using the GPS or cell towers to triangulate the position.

Most likely, the police will just do a theft or robbery report and you will have to get a new phone, anyway. There are cases and I have a friend who managed to recover a phone using this type of service. But, it took him basically convincing the police to make the effort, by telling them that he was at the last know address. Obviously, I'm no...
