It does make sence. If you want to make the monthly payments on the device, then that is why the 2 year contract would be required. If you just want to pay full price up front, no contract is required. With the installment plan, t-mobile is technically giving you a loan for the cost of the phone and you are paying it off - the reason for the contract.

Let me tell you - NO MATTER WHAT PHONE YOU CHOSE, the value plan, always, always, every single time, ALWAYS comes out to be less expensive in the end. Always.
