Sprints merger with Nextel has little in common with T-Mobile MetroPCS deal

by mikkej2k    Nov 20, 2012, 1:39 AM

Sprint and Nextel did not share frequencies or technologies. The demographics for their customer bases were very different. Until LTE , Sprint and Nextel had no natural upgrade path and had to run two separate networks.

T-Mobile and MetroPCS have a natural upgrade path: LTE.
T-Mobile is a GSM/EDGE , UMTS/HSPA network that shares frequencies with MetroPCS. MetroPCS is a CDMA/LTE network.

Quotes from Wikipedia: "LTE is the natural upgrade path for carriers with GSM/UMTS networks" and "LTE services were launched by major North American carriers as well, with the Samsung Galaxy Indulge offered by MetroPCS starting on February 10, 2011 being the first commercially available LTE smartphone"
