Sprint and Nextel did not share frequencies or technologies. The demographics for their customer bases were very different. Until LTE , Sprint and Nextel had no natural upgrade path and had to run two separate networks.
T-Mobile and MetroPCS have a natural upgrade path: LTE.
T-Mobile is a GSM/EDGE , UMTS/HSPA network that shares frequencies with MetroPCS. MetroPCS is a CDMA/LTE network.
