At least that's what some people say, that Nokia's proprietary CDMA chips do weird things. This'll be interesting...Nokia branded phones that aren't Nokias.

That used to be the case, but Nokia's newer 1xRTT chipsets are generally excellent, and even outperform most Qualcomm chips in some ways.

Out of curiosity Rich, does the 3589i use a TI chipset? My unit always seemed to out perform other Verizon handsets in regards to RF.

Yes. I believe the 3589i was among the first Nokias to use Nokia's newest CDMA chipset, which I'm pretty sure was developed, or at least manufactured, in partnership with TI.

that's funny, all of the 3589 and 3588's that I've sold have always had more problems than other verizon or sprit phones respectively. Although I'm interested to see how their phones they are releasing this summer will perform...

Well, I'm still using my 3589, but it's got some problems with a few buttons on the keypad...sometimes they don't want to work. BUT, the reception is great.

Where do you live? I live in the St. Louis area, and nokia's tend not to perform as well as other makes/models. From what I have seen from the two carriers models they rank as follows:

VZW SPCS
------------------
Motorola Sanyo
Samsung/LG Samsung/LG
Nokia Nokia

Thats in my neck of the woods. I hear alot of people complain about Moto's but neither I nor anyone I know with a Moto in STL has ever had problems.

Personally I would like to see nokia make some higher end CDMA models. You basically have 2 companies that make good phones for CDMA carriers. Sanyo and Samsung for Sprint, and Motorola and Samsung/LG for Verizon. A bit more compettition means better phones, and better prices (in theory). In my ...

The reason that GSM handsets are and will probably continue to be cheaper than there CDMA counterparts is due to economies of scale more so than anything else.

CDMA = 100 million + customers
GSM = 1 Billion + customers

Almost ten times the subscriber base will equal a difference in prices for everything. Phones, base stations, pannels, EVERYTHING.
