Actually it is illegal to have a monopoly and to leverage your market share to your advantage. The Sherman act specifically outlines it.

BTW Apple is not a monopoly. They are a software company, which is by far smaller the Microsoft. In terms of Apple Itunes. yes they have done unfair market practices and have faced sanctions in the past as a result. the most recent was in regards to e-books.
The price of songs though was not set by apple, It was originally set by Napster. they set the .99 a song price before Itunes was even born. The reason the .99 a song was set is because that was the agreement reached by the recording industry and Napster as a result of a huge law suit.
