No kidding, I've noticed some phone having something like that here and there, are they trying to start some new trent with that or something? It's really not lookin' good at all. Maybe someone should inform them.

The Siemens CF62T has it too! My friend bought that phone, she said it was the antenna. You can also loop a phone strap or a lanyard to it.
