It should be free

And it should be boxed with the device in question...if you're going to screw over people who have spent the last 10 years devoted to your product by suddenly changing the connection, thereby making all their peripherals useless, it is wrong to make them pay you for the privilege of being screwed over.

Nah, you have to be fair. Even though i probably won't own a apple for the foreseeable future. They made a smart choice with the lightning adapter. In a few years nobody is going to really even care about the 30pin. After that old dock breaks and they buy a new dock with lightning instead no-one will care. Apple does a good job of making good choices so far (with steve jobs plans anyways) and you can't get mad because they decided to update their connector port after sticking with the 30pin design for forever.

I'm not angry that they changed the port, I'm angry that they expect me to re-purchase all my accessories, or purchase an adapter. If you're going to suddenly rip the rug under people, you should make the transition as smooth as possible.

There are literally thousands of iPhone, iPad, iPod accessories out there.....the moment the connector is changed, all those become useless. If you're going to inconvenience your customers, you should provide the adapter with the device. Expecting them to buy an adapter, or worse, re-purchase all your accessories. are both unacceptable.

They do not make the third party items. They are trying to distinguish there products and this is how to do it.

What are you talking about? Apple makes a plenty of its own accessories and none of those are compatible with the adapter either. And how is it logical to piss off 3rd party vendors by making their products obsolete?

What do you do then? Being Apple I think they made the right choice and did all that they needed too. Most of your accessories are made from other companies i'm guessing not Strictly apple and either way, i'm not sure I see a better option?

Of course the accessories are made by a third party, at the behest of Apple, and controlled by strict licensing. Having access to said thousands of accessories is one of the main draws of using an iProduct in the first place.

The solution was stupidly simple - include the $5 adapter with the iPhone 5 (and new iPod Touch and whatever else) rather than expecting all the millions of iPhone users to go out and buy the adapter separately for $30 FREAKING DOLLARS.

It doesn't really affect me, so I don't care /that/ much, but it still seems really spiteful to their customers to have made the transition work the way that they have.

If you think those adapters cost $5 to make you're delusional. I remember when I ran my cellphone store I bought that kind of stuff wholesale for $1, and those guys were making bank. I'd imagine it costs somewhere between $.01 and $.05 to make one. It wouldn't be much of a loss to include it in the box, but then Apple couldn't completely stick it to their customers.

Of course they don't cost $5 to make. My apologies, that was just a quick number as an example. You're right, even with the "smart chip" or whatever the hell its supposed to have in it, things like that cost mere pennies to mass produce. My point still stands, there's no reason Apple couldn't have included one with all new iDevice purchases aside from them enjoying said people's money more than they enjoy being awesome.

But then again, Apple fans are always quick to point out Apple's massive profit margins, so....I dunno, maybe those people LIKE being screwed out of their money.

He's right. You're spending nearly a grand for an unlocked iphone 5 and they force you to also pay for new adaptors / accessories? It's pretty crazy if you ask me, based on how much these devices and accessories cost.

You think apple could have been gracious enough to include an adaptor? Obviously not, this is apple we're talking about, a chevrolet phone with a ferrari price tag.

It's not necessarily making all their peripherals useless, they still sell the iPhone 4 and 4S that use those accessories. No one complained when Samsung released 19 different ports throughout the duration of phone releases before settling on on microUSB. Think about those people that had to change accessories due to a new port because they couldn't keep the same port for each iteration of a phone.

It only made sense to make the connector different due to the thinness of the device, if they had left the 30 pin connector, the iPhone 5 wouldn't have been made as it compromised the design of everything else. It's not the first time a company has changed their connector and at least they are guaranteeing it a long life, just like the 30 pin ...

No one complained? Hell, I complained. I've been complaining about proprietary phone connectors for almost as long as I've owned cell phones. The switch to standardized ports (namely Micro-USB, but also to a lesser degree the Mini-USB before it) was one of the best things to happen to the mobile industry (personal opinion).

That said, Apple will get hell for this for a little while, but then everyone with a new Apple product will have the new chargers and probably a handful of adapters and it will become much much less of an issue. I still think it would have been a better decision to go Micro-USB, but I understand that that would be against Apple's style to conform to industry standards. Whether one finds that to be a good or bad th...

So, how does your logic justify charging your customers $20 for an adapter that allows them to continue using their peripherals which you have insinuated are not obsolete? Me thinks you fail to comprehend the meaning of "obsolescence".
