If I was teaching a class in Computer Programming and asked the class to write a program to perform a bubble sort, 90% or more of the assignments handed in would be identical except for the names of the variables, and even then, I expect there would be very little variation. And the more advanced the students are, the more likely that their projects will all look the same. There will be a great deal of variation with first year students, less variation with seniors, and almost no variation at all with graduate students.
Once you have decided that you are going to do a certain thing....there is generally only one way to do it, or one efficient way anyway, and the more knowledgeable someone is about the subject matter the more likely you are to do it that one specific way.
Trying to patent a specific kind of UI is ridiculous. There is not a great deal of room for genuine innovation, and whatever idea you try to implement, there's really only going to be one way to do it.
