and there are ways to enforce this. Software side and network side. Now AT&T verzion sprint and T mobile among others can legally deny you service if they see you have the wrong software on your phone and can even deny you support. Also means the government can fine you if the information is turned over and possible legal ramifications. Sadly I see the big carriers supporting this because it in the long run it could save the money by denying people support and saving money due to illegal hotspot use.

You buy a cellphone you should be able to do whatever you want to it. I buy a pc, I can put linux, windows 2000 or whatever I want. I can also download programs from cnet's download.com Once I purchase the device the carrier no longer owns the device, Steve Jobs no longer owns the device. Greedy bastards! I laugh at verizons new shared data commercials. Sounds so good til that get to 1 bucket of sharable data.

I love how they say "The Library of Congress explained that it believes there are enough unlocked handsets available in the market at this time". Im pretty sure all carriers(for sure VZW and Sprint) lock the phones from the get go. It seems quite arbitrary that phones can be unlocked but not tablets. Like the other post that refers to the differnce of Rooting to Unlocking.
