Latin America and India...

I wasn't aware that India even had any CDMA networks. There's certainly a market for it...with 1/6 of the world's population. Pretty neat looking phones too.

CDMA in India is a fairly recent thing (at least on a large scale). I believe that from 2002 to 2004 the CDMA carriers' market share in India went from 2% to around 25%.

India's largest wireless carrier is currently operating both GSM and CDMA-2000 networks. The CDMA-2000 will be operating on CDMA450 which is operating at 450MHZ for greater range from the towers.

The plan is for the CDMA network to become the domestic network of choice and for the GSM network to accomodate international roamers.

The same may also happen in China where they have installed an EVDO network in some of the larger cities and Moscow also has an EVDO network installed.

CDMA450 seems to be really hot internationally right now. I can think of half a dozen or more countries that are starting networks based on it. I have to admit though, that I don't completely understand why (if anyone does know the specific reasons why - I would appreciate your insight). From what I've heard lower frequencies tend to diffract better, which might make this better for mountainous terrain, and open competition between different technologies is always good for the customer, but other than that . . . ???

I'm sure it has to do with what spectrum is available in those parts of the world.

Yes, that is very true. 450MHZ is more effective over distance than 850MHZ just like your broadcast VHF TV stations are better over distance than your UHF stations. For a country with a lot of open spaces to fill with signal like India it is a godsend. 450MHZ is not as friendly in "urban canyons" as 850 or 1900MHZ due to the long wavelength.
It also will have a lot of reflections off of mineral substances but the rake filters in CDMA phones should handle that okay.

If that's the case in India, it'll certainly start evening out the GSM/CDMA race. There's a whole of folks in India.

The bulk of China will probably have another variation of CDMA that is uniquely Chinese unless of course CDMA and EVDO can deliver the goods for a whole lot less money. Many networks in China operate on GSM but at this time they are cool towards UMTS as a national technology.

Jeff, if you don't mind my asking...where do you read up on this stuff? Or do you travel in circles us mere mortals aren't privy to?
