A few years ago (don't remember exsact dates) I belive in 2008 Sprint sold a large majority of their towers than rented them from a third party in order to generate a large lump sum of money. This did not generate enough funds to do it, neither will the softbank purchase their are still the much more important issues of network, manaement, marketing. This may help Sprint make a big comeback, but catching up to ATT and Verizon is a longways off (over 70 million subscibers.)
