This Would Be a Bad Move.

Tmobile is GSM based and MetroPCS is CDMA. While both carriers transitioning to LTE would eliminate compatibility issues, the GSM, CDMA legacy would remain for several+years. This would inherently re-live a Sprint/Nextel mess. I doesn't make sense to me. Personally, I don't know what DT is thinking.

Even Forrest Gump knows that "stupid is as stupid does"
If any entity merges with MetroPCS, some of the most competitive prices in the industry would go right down the drain............ 😲

True but Metro was planning to move the CDMA customers to VoLTE and sunset the CDMA network anyway. Either way it would be inevitable that the CDMA customers would somehow be affected. I don't think it would be that messy as Sprint/Nextel though and prices would stay competitive IMO. Plus the spectrum matches. Metro has AWS and so does T-Mo. T-Mo wants LTE and Metro already has it.

You are pointing out two things that I think are precisely the reason it is bad. Metro's customers do not want to be on a contract. Hence why they have Metro in the first place. Most of Metro's customers are still on CDMA. The cost for the carrier to transition is not financially feasible. In the end, it would be like the company telling most of Metro's 9 million people to take a hike.

I don't see the logic. Tmobile could possibly refarm their spectrum but it doesn't seem very strategic. It would leave them in a chaotic position. They are already an outcast with their current AWS spectrum holdings.

I say leave well enough alone.

I'm not sure I see your point. Couldn't they just be migrated to Tmobile's pre-pay non-contract plans? Especially if the merger allowed Tmo to offer such plans at similar cost to Metro? If they could keep a similar plan, with a newer device, and better coverage, why would they want to leave?

I don't see a reason as to why they would be forced to change their plans. As a T-mobile rep, on the odd call, I do see customers who are still on Suncom plans. We never forced them to change then, hopefully that stays the same.

NOTHING could be as 'messy' as the cluster**** that the Sprint Nextel 'Merger of Equals' was. I say give Metro a chance. Everyone wants to be the man. DT wanted out and I much prefer a small fry like Metro 'buying to own' T-Mobile than AT&T swallowing T-Mobile whole. This really shows how DESPERATE DT is to get out of the U.S. market. I wonder why Vodaphone refuses to sell out? Oh, Is Verizon THAT profitable still? I thought they were not paying dividends.

I just left VZW as an employee. They are more than THAT profitable. Vodafone isn't selling out anytime soon.

GSM carriers acquire CDMA carriers, and vice versa all the time, you do need some time to make the transition but it is not horrible, I live in one of the old Altell markets that was divested to at&t, it took about a year for Altell;s CDMA towers to be converted to at&t GSM...but it was an easy transition, and the Altell customers who stuck around were happy because they all got free phones, WITHOUT having to sign a contract extension.....win/win....

That is a great example. I would look at this situation more of an LTE carrier and another LTE carrier merging, it's just that neither company has fully completed their LTE transition yet.

I disagree with that statement.

If managed appropriately, the technology should not be an issue. They could pool together their LTE resources, and begin transitioning all GSM/CDMA customers to LTE as devices are upgraded or brought to market, as both companies are already planning combined GSM/LTE or CDMA/LTE devices.

Does anybody remember the Cingular acquisition of AT&T Wire...
