EV-DV killed by DO

viper

Mar 4, 2005, 8:21 PM
there was no point in EV-DV because the operators want to do VoIP via DO.

The real story here is that operators want a full IP network and an air interface with low latency to do VoIP.

The other story is the fact that Qualcomm has reduced the latency on EV-DO enough so people think VoIP over EV-DO might be doable in the not so distant future.

I beleive latency on the latest EV-DO release (the one sprint will deploy) is sub 100 ms. That is huge compared to the 300 to 500 ms it is with 1xrtt and its going to get better.

latency is like how long does something transmit. (ms is the right term. meaning miliseconds.)

hope that helps.

latency = delay

It's the time it takes between when the sender first starts sending and the recipient first starts receiving.

Latency is distinct from data rate, which is how much data the connection can transmit per second once it gets going.

So data rate is measured from the moment the recipient receives the first bit. Latency is the amount of time before that.

No, he was pretty close. "how long it takes to transmit" can be another perfectly valid way of talking about it. There are lots of ways to think about and describe these types of concepts.

So yes, in a simple system, latency is the amount of time it takes a single bit of information to be transmitted from one end to the other. Just note that we're talking about a single bit; latency has nothing to do with how many bits you can transmit in a given period of time (which is what most people would consider "speed").

To continue what I was saying before and explain a bit more:

Latency and rate are the two main types of "speed" you can have with a data connection. Latency is basically how long it takes to get started, and rate is h...

Actually, what he said was "latency is like how long does something transmit", when in fact it should have been along the lines of: In general, the period of time that one component in a system is spinning its wheels waiting for another component. Latency, therefore, is wasted time.

Yep latency is crucial for VoIP and qualcomm has done a good job of reducing it in the case of EV-DO. They have further to go for good voip but they've made excellent progress.

But here is the real question folks: What comes next?

Qualcomm will obviously tweak EV-DO to improve performance for a few years but then what? I can see only three possibilities and only two make sense.

They could combine channels and effectively become like WCDMA and that is the idea behind 3X, combining three channels. I doubt that is really an option that the carriers are interested in.

Option two is intelligent antennas like MIMO (multiple in multiple out). Every air interface is going that route and BLAST from lucent has been tested with cdma.

All in all, its someone wanting to be something but never achieving that and as being seen as something else by everyone around him, in the end wasting his whole life being a dreamer, dreaming of being something he never could be or never set out to become. I guess I'm the one who started all of this . . . I've done a little more reading on latency, and it seems to me that there is a general disagreement (not just on this forum) over what latency really is. From what I've read, most sources tend to favor a definition closer to Rich's, but there are also quite a few that disagree and think that it should be defined as something closer to what nextel18 said. (Take a look at the forum at Wikipedia on the same subject).

Look it up yourself. Put "latency" into google and judge for yourself. In layman's terms, it's when a component in a system is spinning its wheels waiting for another component to answer.
