Sprint Begins Selling EV-DO Card
Umm
Because Sprint will do anything they can to make money, even if it screws the customer.

Oh, that's a brilliant statement. And what company wouldn't charge extra for added versatility?

Oh, that's a brilliant statement. And what company wouldn't charge extra for added versatility?
Cingular. They don't charge a penny extra for EDGE.
And yeah yeah, it's not as fast as EV-DO, but it sure does beat GPRS.
HeroPsychoDreamer said:I didn't know that. And that's awesome. Who cares if it's not as fast as EV DO? It's offered in a lot more places.muchdrama said:evilbstrd666 said:

I personally don't care if it's not as fast as EV-DO, but alot of people out there raise hellfire when EV-DO and EDGE are put into the same sentence. EDGE isn't the fastest, but it's fast, and it's good enough for me.
P.S.--You're fun to verbally spar with.
Now those people that already have it share their love of high-speed connectivity with friends and co-workers, and those people come in looking for EV-DO a whole heck of a lot sooner than if they waited to launch the product that goes with the service.
Anyway, as the article said it's 1xRTT compliant so you can still use it now.
Take a look at the gaming community. Sony have games ready to go with their PS2 system launch, where Microsoft only had a couple games for XBox's launch. Which sy...

Let's think about it. What use would it be for Sprint to launch their EV-DO service with no one being able to use it? Getting the equipment out *before* the launch, as soon as EV-DO goes live, there's an instant customer base using the product.

But in another thought, they already had released a slew of playstation games and a whole bunch playstation ones that are probably showing their age.
Why not sell teleporters now, while there still is a market for them?
Why not sell the pork roast before the pig is born?
When I buy something, I expect to be able to use it.....
evilbstrd666 said:So, you wouldn't mind getting screwed because you were sold a 1xRTT 6 months before the EV DO cards hit market?
Why don't they start selling cars before they make them?

Pretend you need a wireless card NOW - and all they have is the normal 1xRTT. So you buy it (there goes a chunk of cash) and in six months a much faster service is out. You'd be torn between having to buy a new card then to replace your old, now outdated card that you only bought six months earlier OR just finish off your contract on the slower 1xRTT.
Most companies would not make the decision to sell a product before they're able to utilize it fully. For example, it is rumored that the upcoming Samsung A800 for Sprint (and many other phones) actually have a chipset *capable* of EV-DO speed, but since Sprint does not have the EV-DO network t...

What are you guys griping about? This sounds like a smart, customer-centered decision for once.

HeroPsychoDreamer said:What does it matter? The card is around the same price as a regular 1xRTT, and when EV DO hits at mid-year...you'll have the card to handle it.
What's the point of launching an EV-DO card if you don't even offer the service yet and aren't going to for another half a year? Sounds pretty senseless and pointless to me.

Sure, it does make sense to sell an 1xRTT/EV-DO card. But to advertise it the way I think they are going to, makes no sense to me.

Isn't this whole situation kind of similar to what's going on with wimax? It's only available in a few places in the entire world currently, but some of the major computer companies like Intel are already preparing to release wimax capable devices later this year (maybe as early as second quarter). The idea is that high-end users don't want to have to upgrade their notebooks, etc. when wimax becomes available in their area. I think Sprint is going for the exact same thing here.
Sprint starts offering EV-DO cards, the not so knowledgable consumer is going to assume they can make use of EV-DO, eventually they'll figure out that they can't and won't be able to for several months. Then you're going to have them coming into the stores, complaining, bitching, claiming they've been deceived into buying something that cannot use (Motorola V710). Not that it's my problem if it happens, it just appears to be very deceptive to me.
HeroPsychoDreamer said:Rich explains it best if you read his post. If Sprint's going to sell these cards before the service is up and running, they've got to make it known to custome...
But is this the right thing to do? I mean, in a way it seems pretty deceptive.

If I were a business customer (which this is clearly aimed at), I'd be pretty pissed if they didn't offer this, since Verizon's launch proves the technology is available and ready for market.
If I'm a corporate customer looking to equip 500 workers with data cards, I'd be much more likely to choose Sprint if they could at least offer EV-DO cards, if not the service right away. If all they would sell me were 1xRTT cards, I'd basically have no choice but to switch to Verizon.
At least this way a $100,000 investment in data cards isn't for...

Well, for someone in the market for a card now, wouldn't it be better to have this option, than to be forced to pay a few hundred bucks for something guaranteed to be obsolete in a few months?

I'm not a fan of Sprint, but I have to say that it is a good move. How many times have we heard people complain because they bought a TDMA phone without being given the option of GSM and then they find out that GSM has been around for a while and they paid 150 for a nokia 2260? I tip my hat to the execs who decided to do this. I'm with you muchdrama.
That's just my opinion, I don't agree with it, it's a pretty deceptive, but then again, why doesn't it surprise me that Sprint is doing it.
corys00 said:It's not deceptive in the least if you explain to customers what they'll be able to do once Sprint's EV DO service is up. Like Rich said, this is mainly benefiting business customers.
Since the launch of Verizon's EV-DO network, I'm selling on average 4-5 EV-DO cards a week, just as a indirect dealer. I can only imagine what the corporate stores are doing here in Orlando. Sprint could be trying to hold off potential customers from getting Verizon's EV-DO package (which is already available to 75 million potential customers)

I don't think it will help much.
