On a "metered plan", let you customers have facetime over cellular network but charge the overage... Facetime is a manufacturer installed application that uses data and why does big blue care HOW the data is being used and long as it is being paid for..

If you use Netflix, YouTube, Vonage, Skype or Pandora you have to be charged overage what makes this any difference...

I hate AT&T anyway and this kind of d*** move is right up their ally.

The open secret of the mobile industry is that no one ever actually pays overage charges.....they call....whine, throw a tantrum, get a lecture about responsible usage, and then the overage is waived.....that's the way it works....so, no there is no profit in overage charges, because no one ever pays them, they are almost always waived.

I think what at&t is worried about, specifically, with regard to Facetime, is that with all those iPhones on the network, everybody Facetiming is going to immediately congest the network, and it will be as bad as it was in 2007-2008 when 3G was practically non-existent because of all the severe iPhone related congestion. They finally added enough bandwidth to pretty much fix the congestion, at least...

Do you really think it will be that bad? There can't possible be that many customers making facetime calls. Right? I mean, if it was that bad, then surely we'd be seeing the same issue with providers who do let their customers use facetalk over cellular. Right?

At&T doesn't as much bandwidth as other carriers....their LTE network is less than 1/3 the size of Verizon's....

You can still use other applications to do video calling over 3G though.

I've even used facetime over 3G via jailbreak and it worked fine without any issues. This is AT&T just flexing it's muscle to try and screw their customers out of features in phone.

I work for AT&T and I whole heartedly agree.... The blocking of the facetime over cellular doesn't make any sense...... Verizon will force you to move your plans, AT&T says it is going to be the good guys and tells you that they are not going to change your plan or make you change, but they work in the fashion of, if you want the latest greatest thing you have to move to one of their new plans, and after you are on it for about a month or so, they grandfather (expire) the old plans, so that you cannot go back to your old plan..... Just like how you can't tether without a special plan.... Definately something I forsee gettting changed, I get at least 4 calls about this a day..... Pretty high number considering I take anywhere from 40 to 50 ca...

For accounts that have one line, it's not going to save me money at all. It will cost me an additional amount of about $20-$30. I'll take my unlimited and get throttled than paying more and getting 1GB more, and risk overages.
