Yes, it sucks, but...
...How is this policy anywhere near as bad as Verizon's policy of not letting people with unlimited plans get subsidized phones? Verizon has all but forced its customers off of older unlimited plans onto mobile share plans by making them pay full price for phones, while AT&T's only move has been to deny them FaceTime over cellular. Yet I didn't see Verizon get torn apart by the internet with nearly as much vitriol.

Verizon's choice doesn't affect how the device functions. Either way, both are screwing their customers over, especially with the plan options.

You know what's worse? Government intervention. If you think wireless service is bad now, wait until you see how bad it is aftert the government gets involved. Verizon, at&t, Sprint, T-Mobile, they are accountable to their customers, and to their stock holders....but the FCC is acountable to NO ONE....not even Congress or the White House.....how bad do you think it will be when an unaccountable agency that cares about NOTHING at all except the acquisition of power? If you think wireless service is bad now, you ain't seen nuthin' yet.

So it's okay for them to say your unlimited data plan can't be used, but you can pay us more money for less with our new tiered plans. Why is my unlimited data plan not good enough to be used for facetime? That's the whole point of data, rite?

No chance of overages are far better than paying overages though. I wouldn't mind getting throttled versus getting charged for overages.

I pay $30 for "unlimited", throttled at 3GB on 3G, and 5GB on LTE. I'll take that instead of paying more for less.

this is not a debate on throttles vs overages, you asked why the unlimited data plan would not be good enough for face time, I provided a valid answer. My next question however is, are there not altrernate apps on iOs that you can use for video chat?

Facetime over 3G doesn't use a lot of data to begin with actually. 3GB over 3G is more than enough to make a few facetime calls over 3G. It used about 100MB or so for 10 minutes per facetime call.
There are other applications in the appstore that can be used on 3G for video calling, but you have to rely on the other person having that application, whereas Facetime is already on the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 (but facetime is only available over 3G on the 4S and 5), iPod Touch, iPad and Macs.
Being throttled isn't as big of a punishment compared to overage charges is what I was saying though.

Im not saying it wouldnt work because its going to cause users to hit the cap, im saying if you do hit the cap and get throttled than its going to run like crap 😉

Verizon's choice affects one's ability to own the device in the first place, which I consider far worse than curtailing one feature which can still be used over wifi.

Verizon's choice to not renew contract with unlimited plans is a well played strategy and they are not harming anyone or limiting anyone. The phones are regular priced and the company offers you a contract in return for a subsidized price on the phone. The way they are phasing out the unlimited data plan is the same way all carriers phase out all the legacy plans from the past there is no wrong doing they set the rules when it comes to upgrade policy and this is NO WHERE in your contract that guarantee's you a discount or says otherwise that the contract guarantee's you a discount on a new phone or specific plan after your term is up. I am not on Verizon side at all its just how it is if you want a discount on a expensive phone you are going...

Where on EARTH did you hear that? Everywhere I go on the internet I hear Verizon getting crapped on for being one of the first to adopt bad policies and the last to adopt good policies, the slowest at pushing upgrades/updates, the worst at gimping phones, and ruthless about data charges.
The only good things I ever hear about Verizon is that they have great coverage and good LTE. O_o

Buying a phone isn't a right, it's an option. No one is forcing you to go buy a new phone.

It has nothing to do with "rights". It's a simple question of how big of a perq you're being asked to give up by each carrier, and having some perspective about one's reactions to each.
