SAN JOSE (MarketWatch) -- Research In Motion Ltd. RIMM +5.16% said Tuesday that its subscriber base has passed the 80 million mark, up from the 78 million the company reported in its first fiscal quarter report in late June. Chief executive Thorsten Heins reported the increased subscriber base during a keynote address at a developers' conference in San Jose, Calif. RIM is showing off previews of its new BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system that is expected to be released early next year. The company will also report results for its second fiscal quarter on Thursday afternoon. RIM shares, which were trading flat earlier, jumped more than 2% to $6.45 following Hein's disclosure.
