Verizon has surprised me again! Shocked
Not only can you buy an unlocked iPhone on contract with Verizon but you can actually switch and take your phone with you to AT&T!!!

Doesn't releive you of your contract with Verison.
Pretty much meaningless.
Get an iPhone5 for 199.99 on a Verison line, move the phone to an ATT line, you are still under contract to Verison and must pay the monthly bill as if the device was active on the line. Or, pay the early termination fee.

Some people will actually buy the phone outright.

The more people that are able to purchase the phone , potentially the more valuable the phone will be for resale.

An iPhone locked to Verizon is worth less than an iPhone that's unlocked if you want to sell it down the road.

I went to a Verizon Wireless corporate store last week to buy a Motorola DROID RAZR M without a contract. I told them I was planning on putting my at&t SIM in the phone and using it with my at&t service.

They WOULD NOT sell me the phone for full retail price $549.99. They said they cannot sell phones without service.

"They said they cannot sell phones without service."

Yeah, that's pretty standard, I don't know anyone who will....also...if you don't already have service, they generally won't allow you to buy a phone at the no commitment price without signing a contract....

It is actually standard practice with all carriers that after a customer cancels service he can get the unlock code.......

It's not meaningless. That is simply ridiculous. Basically, I can buy a Verizon iphone 5 at contract price, never activate it and immediately place it on Ebay. Sure my existing handset is now locked into a two year agreement, but I was going to keep it for two more years in any case. Guess who has two handsets eligible to upgrade at this very moment? Yep!

Had a choice.
I mean iPhone's are pretty well untouched by carriers. Although mine was from ATT. The box was shrink wrapped and there was an ATT SIM already installed.
Therefore untouched by the carrier. I think once again Apple was like "this is what you get. Sell it or not, we don't care wireless carriers."

is the Sprint iphone 5 locked? They are the same device. This is carrier driven. Who would have ever believed that Evil Red would have a more consumer friendly policy than Sprint? Not me that's for sure. I am one of Verizon's biggest critics and shall remain so, but one has to give credit where it is due. This is as surprising as Verizon allowing Google Maps on Android for free. Seriously, are there any people out there with an android device actually PAYING VZW for VZ Navigator?
