AT&T Taken to Task Over FaceTime Blocking
Freedom to switch
Its not like they are blocking it, they are just making you get a compatible plan. They cant just keep offering you more and more at the same price. I feel people are too quick to jump on the "my cellular company is trying to screw me..." bandwagon.
"Free to switch" is BS in an industry which uses 2-year contracts and has exclusive bundles with hardware manufacturers.

"Compatible" has nothing to do with it. Facetime is "compatible" with a data connection. This is an arbitrary demand for a specific rate plan to use an app which only requires a normal Internet connection.

Nobody was ever forced to accept a contract to have cellular service.
You have an option of paying retail for a no commitment service with a carrier.
If you want an expensive phone without the initial outlay of cash, buy it with your credit card at retail and pay it off in installments. No contract required.
No contract almost always means higher rates, which is insane considering that the "low" rates are already padded to force you to pay for "free" phones. A fair rate with no contract is and always has been the minority exception, and that's assuming that there are absolutely no other factors limiting a person's choices.
Wireless service is plagued with arbitrary carrier policies and limited options. To pretend otherwise is ridiculous.
explain to me the tons of customers who haven't upgraded in over two years, contract expired, but their service charges did not go up
you can walk into any Verison, ATT, Sprint, Tmobile store with your own compatable equipment and get a line of service at the exact same price as someone who is accepting a subsisized phone with a contract.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
Educate yourself prior to spouting trash.
