Great job Apple, more technological waste!

There was no reason they couldn't have just made the iPhone 5 microUSB. They're both using USB 2.0 so they will both have the same limitations on speed. The only advantage is that lightning is reversible, which is very nice, but unfortunately not the industry standard.

They're contributing to technological waste, have instantly made thousands of docks and adapters mostly useless (the legacy adapter looks ugly).

I understand they are a business, and they want to do what's right for their bank accounts, but it'd be nice for them to do what's right for the world and their consumers for a change.

I would hope that some company (it certainly won't be apple) will come out with a reverse adapter... basically you could insert an adapter into an existing 30-pin dock that will then hold a new iPhone5 or new iPod touch. One that mimics one of the older models in shape so that the dock still gives it support.
But I agree, apple's need to control everything has created a huge waste.

but makes those "useless docks and adapters" useful again..

They could have simply said "eff you" to the manufacturers of those docks and adapters and said you need to comply to the new specifications of the new iPhone.

You are just being nit-picky. At least they are offering it as the phone comes out. There will be 3rd party offerings, but Apple is the first to offer it to set the standard.

The new plug actually had to be like this for the Thunderbolt technology, (that's on all of their new laptops) they couldn't use the 30 pin connector for the new connection type.

Apple has always been strict on 3rd party accessories being within compliance for the products it can be used with. There are always 3rd party accessories. I'd say that would be common sense, no? Why would you want other companies making inferior products that could damage your device?

Well....look.....an official Apple data cable for an iPod Shuffle....$12.99....a third party cable that works just as well $1.99....

Why pay the Apple premium if you don't have to?

And it's still a serious question, why Apple is sticking to its proprietary 30 pin technology when it would be better and easier for everyone if they just used mini-USB.....and the answer is because Apple has to be different.....if Apple made a car it would have square wheels, not because there is any benefits to having square wheels, but because square wheels would be different.

You pay an obscene price for many branded accessories, not just Apple accessories.

Hell, look at Monster Cables, a $95 HDMI cable will be $2 on every where else. I can go on and on about accessories from the actual manufacturer will always be priced high compared to 3rd party cables. So I'm not sure exactly why you are going this route to bring up an argument.

Because they aren't using USB, they are using Thunderbolt. The connectors are different and the connectors wouldn't be compatible. Apple believes Thunderbolt is the future , and they are the frontrunners with this idea. It's on the laptops now and is actually showing up on motherboards for PC now.

Mother board with Thunderbolt -

It's slowly becoming known and could potentially be on a lot of products to come. The transfer rates are insane, far more faster than USB 3.0 (which was I was hoping the new iPhone would have.)

By what I mean by they aren't using USB, I was referring to the port that plugs into the phone, not to the PC.

That's if they will fit. Some docks shell the iPhone, and it will be too tall with the adapter.

I'd assume it will be the same thickness from previous iterations of the iPhone, and will fit just fine. It will just dock into there like such, and the iPhone will go on top and all will be well.

Plus many docks have the particular plastic part that is removable to put in the correct fitting for the certain device to dock properly.

Most docks don't have anything to cater to the top of the phone..the port at the bottom is the only thing that the docks are worrying about.

If I read an article correctly, the biggest issue with the new plug is, Apple will not include an adapter with the iPhone 5. So, you will have to spend an additional thirty bucks, if you want to use your older docks and other accessories.

If I were an iPhone user, I would be a little upset with that. Include the adapter for new iPhone 5 buyers and all will be right in the world and people will not care about the new change.

"I understand they are a business, and they want to do what's right for their bank accounts..."

Do you really?

"...it'd be nice for them to do what's right for the world and their consumers for a change."

Why?

I've said it before (usually about Verizon who I despise) it is not reasonable to expect businesses to act counter to their interests. They are not "good guys". NONE of them are (Dan Hesse). It is going to be up to consumers and regulators to hold them accountable. In this case, there really is no need for government intervention. So that leaves the consumer to refuse to buy Apple's accessory. I know... Fat chance.
