Apple to Offer Lightning-to-MicroUSB Adapter
Great job Apple, more technological waste!
They're contributing to technological waste, have instantly made thousands of docks and adapters mostly useless (the legacy adapter looks ugly).
I understand they are a business, and they want to do what's right for their bank accounts, but it'd be nice for them to do what's right for the world and their consumers for a change.
But I agree, apple's need to control everything has created a huge waste.
They could have simply said "eff you" to the manufacturers of those docks and adapters and said you need to comply to the new specifications of the new iPhone.
The new plug actually had to be like this for the Thunderbolt technology, (that's on all of their new laptops) they couldn't use the 30 pin connector for the new connection type.
Why pay the Apple premium if you don't have to?
And it's still a serious question, why Apple is sticking to its proprietary 30 pin technology when it would be better and easier for everyone if they just used mini-USB.....and the answer is because Apple has to be different.....if Apple made a car it would have square wheels, not because there is any benefits to having square wheels, but because square wheels would be different.
Hell, look at Monster Cables, a $95 HDMI cable will be $2 on every where else. I can go on and on about accessories from the actual manufacturer will always be priced high compared to 3rd party cables. So I'm not sure exactly why you are going this route to bring up an argument.
Because they aren't using USB, they are using Thunderbolt. The connectors are different and the connectors wouldn't be compatible. Apple believes Thunderbolt is the future , and they are the frontrunners with this idea. It's on the laptops now and is actually showing up on motherboards for PC now.

It's slowly becoming known and could potentially be on a lot of products to come. The transfer rates are insane, far more faster than USB 3.0 (which was I was hoping the new iPhone would have.)
By what I mean by they aren't using USB, I was referring to the port that plugs into the phone, not to the PC.
If I were an iPhone user, I would be a little upset with that. Include the adapter for new iPhone 5 buyers and all will be right in the world and people will not care about the new change.
Do you really?
"...it'd be nice for them to do what's right for the world and their consumers for a change."
Why?
I've said it before (usually about Verizon who I despise) it is not reasonable to expect businesses to act counter to their interests. They are not "good guys". NONE of them are (Dan Hesse). It is going to be up to consumers and regulators to hold them accountable. In this case, there really is no need for government intervention. So that leaves the consumer to refuse to buy Apple's accessory. I know... Fat chance.
