I highly doubt Apple will struggle to maintain their presence in the smartphone market. I think they're losing % to lower tier customers who would not have bought an iDevice anyway, and only slightly to higher tier customers who actually prefer alternatives.
Apple phones appeal mostly to the non-techie majority who are satisfied with an operating system that is nothing more than a glorified app launcher.
Innovation and hardware specs are for people that actually understand what the different processors/chips are, and what they mean for performance. iPhone users just want more "GBs".
