Isn't this a bit of a walkback by Apple?

They've stuck with the 3.5 inch display since day one....increasing it to 4 inches seems....a really bizarre move.....Android has been pushing larger screen sizes for the last year and now Apple follows suit...it seems like Apple is following rather than leading...

I can't tell if that's sarcastic.

There are quite a few examples of Apple being the follower from the 3GS on, and we'll be saying that again next year when they add NFC support.

No sarcasm...but usually when Apple has a particular design element....they stick with it come hell or high water...if Apple made a car, it would have square wheels, not because square wheels would make the car faster, more stable or anything like that, but because square wheels would be different...

Personally I think the phone looks ugly with a larger screen... They could have used a different design...

Perhaps. But I hear a lot of people complain about most of today's phones being too large to hold.

In fact, surveys show that some women prefer huge phones like Note (phablets). Why? Because they've given up trying to hold most of today's phones with one hand, so they figure they might as well just go for phone that's designed to require two hands.

But there are plenty of women who haven't given up and need something they can hold with one hand. And plenty of us guys that want something pocketable.

Apple has always been about major profit margins. They would gladly sacrifice a percentage of people having more of a choice as so they can utilize one design for maximum profits.

Not a bad business practice. But as we have seen through their thirty year history, even with very low marketshare they didn't care about consumer choice. Offering no more than anyone else and charging twice as much. They would just as soon go bankrupt before sacrificing some profit margin.

Eventually, history will repeat itself. It has been said that Apple cannot continue to sit back and rely on consumer attraction to the brand name. They must continue to innovate. So far, other than Siri( and I use this technology example loosely), nothing has been groundbr...

I highly doubt Apple will struggle to maintain their presence in the smartphone market. I think they're losing % to lower tier customers who would not have bought an iDevice anyway, and only slightly to higher tier customers who actually prefer alternatives.

Apple phones appeal mostly to the non-techie majority who are satisfied with an operating system that is nothing more than a glorified app launcher.

Innovation and hardware specs are for people that actually understand what the different processors/chips are, and what they mean for performance. iPhone users just want more "GBs".
