My theory is that its not "snob appeal" its marketing.
Apple saturated elementary school computer labs in the 80's and 90's and even today they are giving full classroom sets of iPads to elementary media centers.
It's all about a comfort thing and familiarity. People usually assosiate their 1st exposure to being the best one or at the very least using it as a benchmark for comparison.
Who here actually LIKES McDonald's, (not too many if the truth be told) but from a young age we are inundated with it much like Apple ... My 1st hands on experience was in the computer lab at my elementary school with an Apple IIe with the monochrome screen we played Lemonade Stand. Later we had the IIgs.
Now that we are all the heads of our own households making the big ticket purchasing decisions its a pretty big emotional throw back tie in to break.... But just my theory
