You have a point. Apple really hasn't revealed the number.

But here's the deal and why it's confusing. Apple's original offering was launched with no 3G broadband technology. So when they launched their second model, they wanted to emphasize that their new phone had 3G. For their 3rd phone, they unlocked the processor for more speed and added the "s" to emphasize that. So the next iteration became 4G to emphasize their fourth generation phone but confused the public that it had 4G broadband technology. Then the 4Gs launched to again emphasis increased processor speed yet still didn't have 4G network access. It would make sense to call it the iPhone 6 for their 6th generation. Eseentially, because of the 3G model, they are behind one number.
