Alltel's Celltop is an Innovative leap in cellphone UI

Alltel is definitely high on top of making the UI more user-friendly with a highly customizable "widget-like" experience in Celltop. Not only do I think Celltop effectively addresses quite a few of the major issues/problems, but, Celltop seems to be positioned to make your cellphone easier-to-use, more useful and affordable too -through Alltel's very inexpensive "all you can eat" data plan. Another big plus with Celltop - its not exclusive to a high end $500 device. Alltel may have intentionally launched Celltop with the Samsung U520, a lower end/full featured device (about $50 retail). The rest of the Alltel phones will soon include Celltop. Celltop could very well be THE mobile UI for the masses vs. exclusive devices with VIP "digerati app...

celltop was actually a phone UI, but all it is is one application. yes you can reach a *few* phone functions through it, but once you do, then you're back the regular phone UI. when alltel completely redefines their phone ui and then integrates something like widgets into that, that will be *truly* innovative.

Very similar to Sprint's OnDemand it seems. Less the useless Call Log/Inbox features.

I think it would be more inovative if it just ran in the background of the home screen. If you could choose maybe 3 or 4 that just run idle in the background of the phone so when you flip it open its there. The way helio and cingular both have the scrolling media bars on the bottom of the screen seems to be okay, but more so if it was as the background of the phone. I don't really see anything innovative here and it seems to just be more of a gimmick.

Finally innovation in a mobile device for the rest of us. The phone is affordable, the 10 bucks a month flat fee will take the drama out opening the phone bill each month. I don't know about you but it is a rare month that I don't get minute overage charges. Opening up their widget development to 3rd party development should insure that the innovation keeps coming.

"UI for the masses" ... Point well taken. This is more than just a step in the right direction... This is the right direction. The single price data plan is also on target. I want simplicity at every level. Not complexity. This way I know that I pay $10 and get whatever I need.
