Speed caps

T-Mobile wasn't making any money off putting people on speed caps, like Verizon/AT&T make on overages. A speed cap is purely designed to protect bandwidth and network performance. I'm interested to know why T-Mobile decided to make this move.

Probably to entice customers back to their doors. They're less expensive than AT&T and Verizon, and more reliable (IMO) than Sprint. Add in true un-throttled unlimited data, even if for the time being its HSPA+ "4G" (which in my experience the past few months is still FANTASTIC speeds), and they might gain back a lot of customer base.

Also - once they do shutter their 2G network, they will have unused 850 spectrum, which could go towards a future LTE or HSPA+ network, which could help supplement said network for better speeds.

Are they closing 2G soon? Thank god! I know they have plans to start rolling out LTE next summer (won't do me much good as I don't think the T-Mobile GS3 supports LTE) but hadn't heard they were finally doing away with their older networks. Thought that was Sprint or AT&T doing that....

Now if only they can get some more coverage they'll become a true competitor. They're great for me living in the city, but as soon as I travel outside any major areas the signal goes to suck :\

They might be starting to but it will take them a few years. I know they are shifting the 1900 2G network to HSPA+, and the 1700 spectrum is going to LTE, so that would leave their 850 spectrum for 2G. Really don't know how long its going to take to turn off that network though.
