You can just turn off automatic updates and shut off background data and then manually update when you have WiFi...which seems better...

Maybe not very meaningful for very small apps, but I've heard some apps (mostly games?) can get into GB territory. Even on WiFi if you only have to download a dozen MB update instead of the full GB+ package, this would still save you a good deal of time.
