Note? Is that like a bond?

You give them money today which they can then use to build the company and in return they promise to pay it back with interest later?

I have a few thousand dollars to invest....but I just don't feel like Sprint is a good investment....if I thought they had a chance to repay the money I might buy a few...

"Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) announced today that it has commenced an underwritten public offering of notes due 2020 and notes due 2022."

It sounds to me that if one can wait eight to ten years, the return is guaranteed.

Guaranteed? Even if Sprint isn't around 8 years from now?

Sprint has way too many assets, they won't disappear. If they are not around, then it's because somebody bought them out. Then that new company would have to honor the notes.

Who knows...maybe in a few years Google will buy a carrier and re-brand it... At least we can hope that it won't be VZW or AT&T who tries to take over Sprint.

Jarahawk, I really really like that idea. Google buying a company like Sprint, or T-Mobile would change the industry like crazy. Who knows if it would ever happen. But if Google owned a carrier network (sprint or t-mobile) and a handset company (motorola) and offered free or significantly discounted service by way of advertising on calls instead of dial tones, the internet, on text message templates, who knows what could happen....

That would be a sight to really behold.
AT&T and VZW would be scrambling.

They really would be....

Imagine Google bought out Sprint, and then Apple felt pressure to follow and bought T-Mobile or something like that. Craziness. I'm sure it would never happen. But you're right, AT&T and Verizon would be losing their minds.

Actually when Google lobbied the FCC to have open access included as a condition of purchasing the C block 700 spectrum that Verizon ended up with many hoped Google would get into the game. I still do. A wireless carrier name Google would be awesome. Especially if the ran it like they do their other assets.

Yeah, the idea of Google as a wireles carrier frankly scares me.,...Google itself scares me...they aren't exactly 'one of the good guys'....

Well Verizon damn sure isn't one of the good guys and the idea of Google placing some real pressure on the bad guys (Verizon and AT&T) makes me smile! Very Happy

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

I doubt they will, but I'd totally go for Google Wireless. I use a LOT of their services and products, and I have no bad experiences with any of them, unlike any and all carriers I've been with (everyone except Verizon, so far).

I love the 'bad guys' junk.
Nobody is forced to be a cellular customer.
No cellular customer is forced to be a Verison or ATT customer.

Their customers are there by choice and can leave any time they wish.

They are one of the better guys out there. They started off as a good guy but got huge. I personally have more trust in them than several other companies, including apple. Google's unofficial slogan is "Don't be evil".

You've got a point there, even in a bankruptcy settlement they'd no doubt have to find a way to honor that commitment....
