There's no way in hell I'd get my 8-12 year old a cell phone.

i work for cingular, you'd be shocked at how many 12 year olds have cell phones. and how much they use them, most 12 year olds send 2-3000 text messages a month alone, this is a great idea to make them use the phone for what the parents want them to use the phone for.

i agree- I think this is an excellent idea. No unlimited usage, they can control the numbers it can receive calls from, no number pad... parents want their kids to have phones for safety only, not for day to day communication, and this fits the bill perfectly. I hope US Cellular jumps on this and launches something similar

But if you teach the 8 year old to use it now when they are 25 they won't have to learn. As horrible as it is the older technlogically challenged generation is dying off, so why not start young to inform people of the great convience of technology these days

Good luck to anyone who buys this phone. I have a 15 year old who can't remember to charge it or take it with him. I try to call and find out where he is and I hear it ring in his room. He has at times taken it with him, but he has brought two back broken from skateboarding with it in his pocket.

Now there's an example I can use as ammunition. And he's 15! Let them get some responsibility under their belts before you stuff a cell phone in their pocket.

Hence the little caricatures of Mom and Dad on the front of the phone.

OMG most phones already allow you to set specific call numbers and allow you to program them to only recieve calls from certain numbers, Why not Buy your kid an old GSM cell phone, Put a prepaid sim card in it and add 15 or so dollars a month to make sure they can make an emergecy call.

If that's the case...a handset dedicated to texting and getting help in case of a jam, I'm all for this gadget. The fact that no one will admit to us that excessive cell phone usage will damage our bodies in some manner won't deter me from not allowing my children to use a cell phone in this age bracket. They're growing up, developing...I don't want them exposed to this. B...

Well, if that's the type of usage you'll see from a typical 12 year old...buy him/her an Ogo. Save yourself from the potential overages you'll undoubtedly see from handing a postpaid handset to a 12 year old.
