But on the bright side, people aren't losing their unlimited data when they upgrade...

In fact AT&T and Verizon leadership has already admitted that they expect to make MORE money from customers due to these plans.

I'm talking to someone right now who's gonna raise their monthly bill by $20-30.... and upgrade from one smartphone, four non-smartphones to five smartphones. On the old plans, that price hike would've been at least $80, and that's for the piddly data plans, it would've been $120 with the higher ones. And that's with 10 GB of data shared. Not too bad if you want a lot of smartphones on one plan, or tablets.

might help those family plans where they've got more than 5 lines on there as well, as currently they had to subscribe to more than one family plan, texting plan ontop of any data they might have to use.

This is great for those who have many data devices for this plan goes up to 10 devices per group..this would be great for if there are 5 iphones, maybe a ipad and a playstation vita..that is 7 data devices all sharing the same data bucket and getting unlimited talk and text...its great to see companies come out with innovative ideas to make it easier on the consumer.

This example would be:

10GB=120.00
5 Smartphones=150.00
ipad and playstation=20.00

290.00 is cost...not bad to me..I see the savings and convenience anyway...these plans would have to be for the right consumers.

Yes. Someone who can stay under ten gigs with seven devices. That sounds simple enough.

Somebody and I serious explain to me why I would add my tablet or gaming device if my smartphone has the hotspot feature. I realize I can save battery but I just don't get it. Also I really wish regular phones add in were $10 I have my wife's grandparents on a line they use 5 mins a month. I sure other people do to they got mad earlier this year cause the company they have for internet doesn't do dial up anymore and they had to get DSL.

i feel sorry for people who foot the bill for their parents, relatives, grand parents, children getting their first phones.
$30 to add a line on a basic phone? what's the point? pre-paid is going to have a big explosion again. $100 for 1000 minutes is looking like a bargain more and more everyday for the older generation.

Can someone please explain to me why its so important to have unlimited on there phones when there is wifi almost everywhere. It's annoying to hear people talk about keeping there unlimited plan when all unlimited does is bog down the network and ruins the experience for people willing to pay for data fairly..its annoying..I used to have unlimited but I chose to go to tiered because I learned that I don't go over 3GB anyway..if I do im willing to pay the overage..There is wifi everywhere..silly 🙄 😕 🙄

It isn't, that is why I voluntarily gave up my unlimited data plan in favor of something cheaper....when I'm home, I use my home WiFi, when I'm at work, I use my work WiFi, and damn near every public place, mall, bank, restaurant whatnot, has free WiFi these days.....

Paying for a data plan I don't really need seem pointlessly extravagant...

And WiFi is much faster than 3G, HSPA+ or even LTE anyway, so WiFi is the better choice....

LTE can clock faster than most Wi-Fi connections. Sitting in my house with 3 bars of LTE, I get 10.43Mbps down, 6.69Mbps up... my home cable connection gets 10Mbps down, 1Mbps up. And I've seen LTE go much faster.

Not disagreeing that most people don't need unlimited data though. I used to have it, then found I was using 1 GB a month at most and switched down to save a bit of money.

My home network is 69 megabits per second, and I don't even have the fastest speed they offer...

Yeah it wouldn't be bad at $30 per smart phone. BUT at $45 each your calculation goes up.

10gb- $120
5 Smartphones - $225
2 tablets - $20

Total - $365 before taxes and fees.

Also, I'm wondering how FAN discounts will be applied. Maybe that will ease the blow.

Not sure where you are getting 45.00 for each smartphone. At the 10GB plan each smartphone is 30.00 unless you are wanting enterprise data..

CFO Shammo said that the company expects its new shared data plans will result in customers paying more for their services as a whole. "I think revenue ARPU [average revenue per user] will continue to grow as we get into data share plans and people start to connect more devices [on the network]. As they add more devices, they are going to have to buy up into tiers. So again, you will see the revenue increase there."

You might not save money, but there are those for whom this plan WILL save them considerable amounts of money, and you aren't being forced to change plans, this is simply one more option for people who think it might work for them.

For example, imagine you have two lines, each with a Blackberry, and you are paying $30 a month each line for 3 GB of data, but you only use around 300-400MB of data a month because 90% of the time you are on WiFi....then you can switch this, get 1 GB a month for both devices, save $20 a month, and since you are using Blackberries and are on WiFi 90% of the time anyway, 1GB a month for both devices is PLENTY..

It's good to have options, and that's all this is, just one more option.

without talking about discounts, it would depend on what talk/txt plans your example user was on whether it would save money or not

Yeah well the voice plan this shared data plan offers is unlimited talk and text, to get unlimited talk and text without this plan would be more expensive than getting unlimited talk and text with it....

very few people need unlimited talk -- thats just a bone they are throwing in
