Why would anyone want to rebrand this, and offer it to a customer as brand-x, when it can be sold as Sprint, a brand name that everyone is familiar with?

There is a purchasing mentality that makes some people avoid name brands and new merchandise.
Some people just refuse to purchase new or name brand, as a result they will pay the same, or more at times for off brand and or used.
It is a recognizable trait, well documented in marketing and easily taken advantage of.
