Looking at the full story link, and the more info link as well a couple of things pop to mind.....

1st, they say customers will notice no difference in service, yet the spectrum is shifting from 800 to 1900. If my physics lessons serve me right I believe that means that signal will not travel as well and thus be worse. Especially in mountainous terrain...

2nd, they credit Nextel as building the largest garunteed all digital network in the US. I'm a little foggy on what they are getting at here, I was under the impression that Cingular now has the largest network, but before that Verizon did. Are we playing with words here? Or are they speaking of the Radio capabilities of Nextel?

Well NEXTEL is probably the largest Digital Network built from the ground up in the United States now. Since Verizon went through all the mergers. Cingular went through some mergers and so too did AWS. I am not sure on sprint but didn't they buy out qwests old network?

Actually, Sprint carries the title of "Largest all digital network built from the ground up".
They still owe money on the network as I remember. The Nextel merger makes them not so much "from the ground up".
Cingular and Verizon both have larger networks but they were not "built from the ground up".

And it's about to pay out as the spectrum they amassed (along with Nextel's resources) will put them up there with the big boys in regards to potential.

is Sprint going to run Nextel as Nextel then? When Cingular bought AT&T they merged the networks (or still are?).... does this mean Sprint is not going to just absorb Nextel?

i live in Philadelphia and there are constantly stories in the papers here that the relatively new (maybe 2 years now?) digital communications system for Police, Fire, EMTs etc have dead spots. you really hear about it when some firemen are stuck in a bad spot and can not call for help, or a Police officer can't get a call for backup. nobody has 100% nailed anything down, but Nextel is looking like the #1 suspect, and someone else (maybe it was even Sprint?) as another possible issue. i guess the issue seems to be right near their towers, and being in a city the to...

Actually Sprint merely acquired some towers in the Eugene, Portland, Salem, OR markets tat I know of and Verizon got all of Qwest's PCS licenses which cover markets in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota. This gave Verizon markets that they did not have before but were looking at buying from USCC (Washington and Oregon) if USCC would give them up.

this is wrong. nextel isnt shifting and getting rid of all of its 800mhz. they are just giving up some but in return they are getting contigious spectrum in the 800mhz and the 1.9ghz bands. so nothing has happened just that nextel has contigious spectrum in the 800mhz and 1.9ghz of spectrum. customers wont notice any difference in service what-so-ever.

2. well nextel's are all digital while i belive verizon, cinguglar, and tmobile (not sure about sprint) that some of their a...

Nice sale! 😁
I personaly don't buy the "Customer's won't notice a difference" line though.... I've beenin this business far too long to ignore the fact that customers will notice a difference whether there is one or not. But you could be right, maybe this time things will be the same....

I am pretty sure that they were playing with words there to give them the image of being the biggest (per all those other replies up there....) But I do hear that the radios work almost everywhere....

it basically depends how exactly they retune that area. if they do it so that it doesnt effect any other the subscribers in that area, it wouldnt. nextel is very good with the whole technical aspects of things...

i have talked someone with nextel who deals with towers for my area, mass, as well as the northeast region. he explained to me that nextel will have less spectrum for a certain amount of time in some areas, but he mentioned that with careful planning that they can work things out to be a nice smooth transition.

also nextel has the 1.9ghz of spectrum too and same with sprint. so we might see something... also if co-locations happen between towers with the two companies a smooth transition with the whole consensus plan and retu...
