Maybe the DOJ and the FCC should do more

Maybe The DOJ and FCC need to wake up and do something about the way these carriers are offering their data plans. This is all getting crazy they want you to pay lot's more for the data than we have ever ! Considering the build outs and much more towers than there have ever have been how come they can't offer unlimited data? I thought the point of LTE was for fast and for a plentiful amount of data. Now only to be screwed by these limits? Maybe they need to break up these monopoly giants and things could get back to customer service and value

This will NEVER happen, because our government is bought and paid for by corporations.

The best investment a company can ever make, is buying politicians - so that they then can go unchecked and unregulated.

Now, because of that, they're doing what you're complaining about - charging you outrageous prices, for something that's limited, and not really that great.

That's what you get with an unbalanced capitalism model.

The problems aren't because of capitalism. It's just a few greedy people mess up everything. In Socialism,Communism or any system the same greedy people are messing it all up for us. Government is bought and paid for on any system so get that in your head before blaming capitalism.... Crooks have been here since the start of the world and they will be here till the end of it.

Ok, so I don't necessarily disagree with any of you. However, I would like to point out that while the original intention of the government was to protect the people, the people have an obligation to also protect themselves. If you want to affect change in the way these companies do business, hit them where it hurts... their profits. People whine about the high prices of data on cell phones, not even realizing they have bought in to an idea of "necessity" versus "luxury." How quickly peopel adapt to and adopt the idea that something is needed when in truth, it isn't. We lived just fine without mobile data. We even lived just fine without mobile phones for the longest time. It is a convenience. And like all conveniences, you have to p...

Ok , I mostly agree. But that being said this AWS Spectrum falls in Verizon's lap then there will be a BIG 1 ( Verizon ) , aLittle brother ( At&t ) and the step brothers ( Everybody else ). They will be be able to offer the best 4g experience and beyond. They have many options with that AWS spectrum it's not even fair. Even if they divest and sell some other spectrum to T-Mobile like they have said they will. And it is incredible that the FCC would approve , they are the first line of defense in theese matters. Let's see what the JD will have to say about this matter. Either way for the time being I will not have at&t or verizon as my service provider .

I agree, and can't wait for DOJ to block the sale. The FCC sahould have done it and would have if they weren't so consistently inconsistent.

Data useage is slated to increase by ~500% in the next 5 years.
Tower costs, from start to finish can exceed $500,000 per tower.
Operating costs are not cheap.

How do you propose that the carriers remain financially viable while giving away free data?

I don't know how long you have been using cellular service, but my first phone was a bag phone and driving from one area to another, with a mish mash of regional carriers was a major hassle as you entered their signal area.

If you 'break up' those 'evil' so called monopolies, you end up with a ton of regionals and your cellular experience will vary by who your regional carrier is and the roaming agreements forged between them.

I hear people talking about breaking up Vz, Att Sprin...

And those people are short sighted, and more than likely, did not have cellular service before the big 4 came about. The issue that brings up comments like these is a sense of entitlement that seems to be growing in this country. You make an excellent point.

If you want access to the internet via your mobile device, by all means, do so, but, be prepared to pay for it.

It isn't the talk plans that are financing the upgrading and coverage expansion by the majors. It is data billing and msg billing.

Hell, ATT is giving mobile to ANY mobile if you have family msg unlimited on the account and a $60 700 min family talk plan or a 39.99 individual plan.

If you talk to em nicely, they will add an A-list which will let you talk to 10 designated non mobile numbers free.

The days of 'billed by the minute' passed years ago as the carriers.
As competition increased, roaming was tossed also.

So, where are they going to get revuenue to expand and upgrade?

The most popular item going.... DAT...
