Verizon And Cigular Sleeping?

Did Verizon and Cingular forget about the auction, or do they just not care enough to compete for the coverage? I'm baffled, both companies claim that they want to increase coverage, but the don't act when they get the chance. 😕

Yea whats the deal with that? Verizon and Cingular have all of the money. You'd think Verizon at least would be tryin to get that contract in an attempt to get back at cingular for stealing their spot on top.

Verizon and Cingular might not need spectrum in the LA and Houston areas. Metro and Tmobile do.

I just checked the coverage in Houston, and Verizon's coverage has a lot of roaming in that area, they could use the spectrum. As for LA, the coverage there is pretty good. too bad there is no map of what the coverage for auction is 😢

verizon continues to buy up tiny carriers in areas where it needs improved coverage. in fact, it bought two more little guys this week. Thanks to AT&T, cingular had a good portion of the country covered, however it is bidding on a few licenses (as is verizon). sprint already had an excess of spectrum, and thanks to the nextel merger, probably has a lifetime supply now, despite ev-do rev. 0's notorius penchant for eating up bandwidth (maybe they'll skip right to rev. a?)

Don't confuse coverage with spectrum. Yes, you need spectrum to provide coverage, but you also need towers, which is whole different issue. And if a company doesn't have enough spectrum in a given area, that's a capacity issue, not coverage.

Anyway, thanks to their acquisition of AT&T Wireless, Cingular has a glut of spectrum in most areas. There are a few areas where they could use more, and where those line up with the areas being auctioned, Cingular is bidding. But buying more spectrum in areas where there already have a lot would be a waste of money.

Plus, Cingular has so much in some areas that the government simply won't let them have any more. Cingular was required by the FCC to sell off excess spectrum in some areas when they m...

I agree. It's kind of a thread killer to have the big man step in and put his foot down. Where was he in the 500+ Verizon post? He could have exercised mercy on us with a similar post. This is still my favorite website. Long live phonescoop.com and Rich Brome!
