The reason they are suing isn't to protect their R&D as you claim, but to hang on to what minor lead they have left.
R&D? Really? One of their suits against HTC or Samsung is that the screen is used for both input and output. Really? So they own the patent on touch screens? Another is that you can't use a computing device (chip) to run algorithms that recognize numbers, addresses, etc. And yet another part of one such suit is that you can't have mulitple options presented. I.e, if you select a number you can have it call, but you can't have it give you a choice between calling, saving the number, texting it or copying it? Seriously, that's what they call R&D. And most of the stuff they are suing is built in to the Android Software, but they aren't suing Google are they, no instead they are suing manufacturers. In fact they really aren't suing but asking for injunctions to prevent the phones from coming to market. Tell me how you don't see this as hindering competition?
Oh wait, it's because you're a fanboy. BTW I'm not a android fanboy, just a person who calls it like it is. If anything Apple just has better lawyers, or more money to throw at lawyers than the other companies. But I guess that is their R&D department.
